A Painting of Clapham

Alan Smith was our guest demonstrator on the 10 September. Our first meeting after the summer was well attended and members were keen to get back into the swing with their brushes! The picturesqe village of Clapham was the subject.

The prepared sketch.

As you can see Alan came well prepared and wasted no time in covering the whole of the painting with pale colours to cover all the white paper.

Slightly deeper tones and the picture begins to take shape.

Alan showed how by careful placing of the darker tones which push back the paler colours the distance is emphasised.

Clapham finished!

Glorious Clapham with more shading and some final touches and Alan did well to produce this lovely watercolour in less than 2 hours. We all particularly liked the reflections in the river.
