Our History and Aims
|
The wealthy mill owner and others of ample means had large houses with grounds and gardens. From these, the kitchen was supplied with fresh food, flowers and fruit. Glasshouses were used to rear plants and fruit which could not endure the outside cold of England. Head gardeners and assistants were lodged nearby, and it was natural that they met others in the nearest town. In 1877, at one such informal gathering, at The Saw Hotel in Little Westgate, Wakefield The Wakefield Paxton Society became established, and has been in continuing existence from that date.
