GREENSCENE : Wakefield Green Party Newsletter

September 2009

The Annual General Meeting was held on 26th September at Thornes Lane Wakefield. We were able to meet some new members: Cherril Toft ;Roger Hopkin; Margaret Wagstaff and Anna Wagstaff., while Robert Toft, Jane Carlton and Tom Bloomfield sent in their apologies.

Officer posts for 2009- 10 were agreed as follows: Chairman ...... Brian Else
Secretary ..... Miriam Hawkins
Treasurer .....Rennie Smith
Web Manager ....Neal Frankland
Publicity Officer ....Robert Toft

The Accounts were approved, and means of raising funds were considered. Ongoing, regular systems were preferred eg. Sales between members (with a donated percentage of price),where the web—site could be used; hosted dinner parties with members and friends (linking the financial and the social elements); as well as direct donations (which tended to fall on the dedicated few).

The Elections were discussed and it was agreed that we stand candidates again in the wards we covered this year (Wakefield West and Rural, and Pontefract North),but also look at the potential to field candidates in Wakefield North and Horbury.

As for the General Election due in 2010,there was agreement in principle that we stand a candidate if we can find the financial resources to fund an election deposit. To this end we will open an account for an Election Bond scheme, with each bond valued at £25. If we retain our deposit (5% of votes ) the bonds can be redeemed. Twenty people taking a bond each will be sufficient to reach our target. Additionally,we will need funding to print leaflets and run a campaign. The new Treasurer will be sending out invitations shortly, but why wait? Send your cheques to”Wakefield Green Party” and specify that you want an election bond as soon as you can.

We hope to run a selection process within 6 to 8 weeks (eg. end of November),with ballots going to all members,so that we have a Prospective Parliamentary Candidate in place in plenty of time for a (possible) May 2010 election.

Publicity: The Chairman agreed to meet with the new Publicity Officer to plan activities which will extend our presence across the constituency to wards such as Ossett and Horbury,as well as the Wakefield and Pontefract areas.

The Website: Members need to use the web-site more to keep up-to- date on issues in the run-up to elections. We have placed all our previous policy documents on the site for review in preparation for the next local elections. Please use the Forum to read these and offer amendments. In addition a new policy statement on “Allotments” has been added. (This is a regular topic of enquiry,as people are keen to start an allotment, but find there is a lengthy waiting period, not enough sites on offer, and little information to be had.Do you have a site near you? Who runs it? Is it fully taken up? Can you find out and let us know?)

See the Wakefield Green Party web-site at http://wakefield.greenparty.org.uk/news and bookmark it. All contact details are there, and lots of links to other relevant green sites.
