Wakefield Concerts

The Society is eagerly looking forward to the new 2016/17 season. We have a number of new young performers and we are very pleased to welcome back Benjamin Frith, a pianist with an international reputation, to open the season in October. We are again pleased to promote 6 live high quality classical music concerts in Wakefield. These are all held in the Jubilee Hall at Wakefield Girls High School on Saturdays starting at 7.30 p.m. See individual concert details attached.

15/10/16 - Benjamin Frith, piano

Benjamin Frith hardly needs any introduction to our regular audience members as he has performed for us on a number of occasions. Ben has an international reputation and we are always pleased to welcome him back to Wakefield.

Ben will start our new season with a programme including pieces by Haydn, John Field, Chopin, Liszt and finishing with Schumann’s Carnaval Op 9. Tickets available in advance see below or on the door on the evening.

26/11/16 - Alba Duo

The Alba Duo consists of Francisco Correa (guitar) and Samantha Pearce (flute). The Duo was formed in 2014 by two award winning musicians with a passion for chamber music. Both musicians studied at the Royal Academy of Music and their mutual love and knowledge of the repertoire for flute and guitar brought them together.

We are very pleased to welcome the Duo to Wakefield where the programme will include, amongst others, pieces by Telemann, Ravel, Piazzolla, Poulenc and Bartok. Tickets available in advance see below or on the door on the evening.

14/1/2017 - Nick Pritchard, tenor

This concert is promoted under the auspices of the Countess of Munster Musical Trust. Tenor, Nick Pritchard, will be accompanied by Ian Tindale on piano. Nick Pritchard studied music at Oxford and finally graduated from the Royal College of Music International Opera School. He won the London Bach Society Bach Singer’s Prize in 2013. He performs both opera roles and concerts.

We are very pleased to welcome them both to Wakefield and the programme will include some solo piano pieces by Schubert and Liszt followed by a rare opportunity to hear Schubert’s Song Cycle Die Schöne Müllerin. Tickets available in advance see below or on the door on the evening.

4/2/2017 - Cassia String Quartet

The members of the Cassia String Quartet are Amy Welch (violin), Tory Clarke (violin), Laurie Dempsey (viola), and Joshua Lynch (cello). This young quartet have been together for two years and come with a wide range of experience and insight into the art of chamber music. They are based across the Pennines in Manchester and perform widely around the north of England.

Their programme will be Haydn’s String Quartet Op.64 No.1, Shostakovich’s String Quartet No 11 in F minor, Op122 and Dvorak’s String Quartet No 12 in F major – American. Tickets available in advance see below or on the door on the evening.

25/2/2017 - Duo Armande

The two performers in this group - Claire Hawkes (clarinet), Shulah Oliver (violin/viola)- met whilst studying at the Royal College of Music. They are a unique and versatile ensemble exploring the repertoire for the unusual combination of both clarinet and violin and clarinet and viola.

They will be performing a programme entitled “Dance Inspired” including pieces by Beethoven, Saint Saens, Debussy, Strauss and Tchaikovsky and maybe a tango or two. Tickets available in advance see below or on the door on the evening.

25/3/2016 - Gelachter Trio

This trio - Emma McGovern (oboe), Jessamy Holder (clarinet)and Lois Au (bassoon) - was founded in 2009 at the Royal College of Music. They are a dynamic and versatile ensemble based in London and are described as “having lively and enthusiastic musical personalities and combine to make enormously satisfying and enjoyable interpretations”.

Their wide-ranging programme will go from Mozart and Beethoven to Gershwin and Gordon Jacob with other stops in between. Tickets available in advance see below or on the door on the evening.
