A Welcome Message by our Immediate Past President

Welcome to our website.

I am Amanda Potts and I was privileged to be the President of this Club for the year 2009/10.

I have been a member of Soroptimist International for 12 years, transferring from SI Bacup and Rawtenstall in Lancashire to SI Wakefield in 200I. I grew up in Wakefield but left to work in Children’s Homes in different parts of the country. Happily back home in Wakefield, I now work for a Local Authority supporting the training and qualification needs of staff who work in its Children’s Homes.

Soroptimists in Wakefield aim to make a difference and, in doing so, we enjoy and inform ourselves; we make new friends; and we get a lot of satisfaction from what we do. In recent years, we have:

  1. Raised money for TB nurses in Zambia – by cycling the distance from Wakefield to Lusaka (on exercise bikes in a nice cool gym – we’re not Wonderwomen !)
  2. Funded a water aid project for Zimbabwe – by swimming the length of the Zambesi River – in a nice warm pool in a gym – still not superheroes!)
  3. Increased awareness of the misery caused by human trafficking
  4. Enjoyed any number of socials, garden parties, meals and concerts which have raised substantial sums of money for local and national charities. We also (quietly) support a shelter of women and children who have suffered domestic violence and help feed the homeless at Christmas; and
  5. Contributed to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance by donating old bras!

In my Presidential year, I concentrated on local charities and organisations which help the people of Wakefield and district eg CAP, help students who do not live at home to live comfortably by supplying them with everyday items such as crockery, bedding etc..

If you want to do more than drop a few coins in a collecting tin; if you want to make a difference personally – and make friends with other women who feel the same – Soroptimism may be for you.
