This is a preliminary announcement to inform you of the success of our joint campaign with Pontefract Civic Society (PFAG) to protect and/or record the remains of St Richard's Priory beneath the infirmary.

As a result of the public meeting held on Tuesday 12th, the petition, and constant lobbying, members of PFAG - the Pontefract Friary Action Group - were invited to a meeting of the local National Health Hospitals Trust.

There will now be no further penetration of the archaeological levels, and the priory site will be buried to protect it in future.

Further, this society will be carrying out an excavation on the north west part of the infirmary site (immediately to the left of the top of Bluebell Steps) beginning on Tuesday 26th July. The area chosen is that of the monastic and post-monastic cemetery where graves have previously been noted.
