La Garde Imperiale was formed in Wakefield in 1971. It is the oldest Napoleonic re-enactment group and display team in Europe. In the past 35yrs we have acheieved much, the more we do, the more we want to do. We have already atteneded bicentenial events in Paris (2004, 2006) and at Austerlitz, (2005), and we will be following in the footsteps of the Emperor accross Europe, culminating with the bicentenial event at Waterloo in 2015.
La garde recreates the artillery of the French Imperial Guard. We have two sections, foot artillery, and are forming a horse artillery section. The gunners man four guns (a half battery), the guns being the only full size guns of their type in use in re-enactment today.
La Garde, in co-operation with Horses Through History, has formed the only operating Napoleonic horse team in the world. The combination of big guns and horses is unqiue to la Garde, and we are endeavouring to take this concept forward by forming a horse artillery section. This project is unique to Europe, and to make it happens we are looking to recruit horsemen and women.
