Gawthorpe Brass 85 is more than just a Brass Band - Based in Gawthorpe, a former mining village in West Yorkshire, our Band covers a repertoire as diverse as the age group of our members.
Music Funclubs start for children as young as 2 years old. The organisation supports this early introduction to music right through the age groups; typically children progress to a brass instrument at age 6 - 8 and join the training band. They can then progress through to the Junior Band, where the typical age is 6 - 11, and then on to the Youth Band up to the age of 19. Many of the youngsters introduced to music through Gawthorpe Brass 85 have played at the highest level. We currently have former Gawthorpe youngsters playing with Grimethorpe, Sellers International and Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Bands.
Whilst the organisation was originally set up to provide a Youth Band, the enthusiasm of members means that we are able to support 3 full Senior Bands as well. These bands compete in Brass Band competitions, both regional and national. Two bands now play at Section 3 level. Of course, whilst watching the progress of their children, many parents and grandparents want to become involved. Gawthorpe Brass 85 positively encourages this - often with no previous musical background; parents move through the same stages as the children - starting with the training band.
