Who are we? We are a Voluntary Group brought into existence at the request of the Wakefield Council in 2009 to help improve access and to preserve and enhance the environmental quality of Newmillerdam Country Park. The group is free to join and provides the opportunity for volunteers to carry out practical work in the Park every Tuesday throughout the year and help staff the café in the Boathouse on Sundays in the Summer. The group is led by a small Executive Committee which reflects the wide variety of interest in the Park. There are 5 meetings a year, 2 of which are open to the public. Where are we? The Country Park is situated 3 miles south of Wakefield city centre on the A61 towards Barnsley. It consists of 237 acres of woodland encompassing a large water area. It is free to enter and open every day of the year between dawn and dusk. The area is crisscrossed by a variety of waymarked paths and provides an excellent resource for a wide variety of recreational activities including walking, jogging, cycling, horse riding, fishing, bird watching, geocaching and orienteering.

What do we do? Our work programme “The Way Ahead" (see Downloads section) sets out our short, medium and long term tasks in some detail, but the following gives an idea of what we have achieved and what is happening at the moment. Our biggest project was 500 metres all weather pathway along Lawns Dike incorporating a bridge and viewing platform. There is the ongoing maintenance of the waterways, banks, and pathways and the restoration of the fishing pegs around the lake. The planting Arboretum is nearly completed. Ongoing maintenance is demanding as is the need to remove the invasive Himalayan Balsam and the diseased Rhododendrons. Funds for material to carry out the work are dependent on grant aid where appropriate but also on the takings of the Boathouse café which is open on Sundays in the Summer. Its successful continuation is dependent on the supply of volunteers.
