The Friends of Newmillerdam Country Park is a group of volunteers who meet weekly to support Wakefield Council in the maintenance of Newmillerdam Country Park and, whenever possible, develop projects to enhance facilities on site for the benefit of visitors. The volunteers meet every Tuesday morning at 09:00 am at the East Lodge entrance to the park and a list of some of the on-going tasks and future projects to be carried out over the next year are listed below. In addition the Sunday Boathouse tea rooms opens during Summer months and only operates with the support of the volunteers - this is the only source of income that supports the Friends activities and all the profits from the cafe are re-invested in the Country Park.

Removal of obstructions to ditches and culverts. Replacement of damaged or missing way-marking posts and discs. Repairs to fencing and stone walling. Regular maintenance of the Lawns Dike walkway and staging. Install new and replace worn / defective benches from around the park as directed by the Council. Carry out a refurbishment programme of the lakeside banks including the fishing pegs. Removal and control of Himalayan Balsam during the growing season. Maintain the picnic site with regular cutting and weed control. Carry out regular maintenance of the areas alongside the Lawns Dike boardwalk. Ensure Lawns Dike remains clear of obstructions and explore the construction of additional stream crossings. Refurbish as necessary the steps to the Arboretum from the main car park and at the Viaduct. Shrub and weed control along lakeside path, including the pruning of overhanging branches. Improve / repair the lakeside path at selected sites. Refurbishment of the garage. Remove excess shrubs and improve the appearance of the open ground abutting the main car park. Installation of new signage when supplied by the Council. Repairs to the wooden access points adjacent to the Causeway. Monitor, maintain and as necessary renew orienteering posts.

Future projects under consideration and subject to funding: Installation of a handrail to the steps from car park to arboretum. New cycleway and alternative access to the Arboretum from car park. Replace the wooden boardwalk on Lawns Dike trail with plastic non-slip boarding. Extension of the Lawns Dike Trail to the Viaduct. Regular cutting of arboretum.
