March Meeting
There was a good turn out at the March 2009 meeting for a talk on How Volunteers can improve the woodland by Tree Warden, Roger Parkinson. He gave a brief history of the development and destruction of British forests from the Ice Age to the Industrial Revolution, explained the difference between 'native' and 'imported' species, described present day threats and emphasised the need to increase and improve woodland.
Roger showed photographs of trees in and around Wakefield and inspired everyone with his enthusiasm for seed collecting and tree planting. Not only do trees help to keep the atmosphere clean and reduce the risk of flooding, they are also an important factor in biodiversity and general quality of life. "The true meaning of life is to plant a tree under whose shade you do not expect to sit"
