Ride Management

On October 24th the Friends of Haw Park Wood committee met with WMDC Foresters on site to discuss the proposed Ride Management work due to be completed in December.

After walking through the woods, looking carefully at the trees marked for felling and expressing strongly held views and opinions, the committee gradually persuaded the foresters to reconsider their options.

In some areas there were significant numbers of deciduous trees, young and old, marked out for cutting down. The committee argued for them to be left and for the contractors to cut around them.

One pathway with steep banks held in place mainly by oak and birch was to be left untouched. Even a few selected conifers, particularly around 5-Ways, were to be left standing in order to keep the 'feel' of woodland but also to help prevent potential wind-tunnel problems.

Other paths were to be given scalloped edges rather than wide, even clearance on each side. By the end of the afternoon both parties were happy with the final decisions.

Thanks to this close liaison and cooperation between WMDC Countryside Service and Friends of Haw Park Wood, the work has been done to enhance and conserve our local woodland.
