Judgement Day for Green Flag Award
On Tuesday May 15th 2007 the Friends of Haw Park Wood were invited to meet the Green Flag judges on their visit to assess the woodland for the prestigious Green Flag award.
To qualify for the award not only do the Countryside Service staff need to show that the woodland is being well utilised and well managed but that there is significant community involvement and that they have plans for improvement.
The judges were taken round the wood to see the Ride Management improvements already underway, the refurbished Waterton Watchtower, the attractive carved benches being constructed from felled trees and the Trans Pennine Trail by the canal. They heard about plans to widen more paths and gradually convert areas of woodland from conifer plantation to indigenous broadleaf.
The Friends of Haw Park Wood have already started collecting native seeds to start a tree nursery that will help to supply some of the plants for the woodland of the future.
Conservation and activity days are planned for volunteers to come along and give a helping hand as well as enjoy a day in the woods.
