Alan showed us his preparatory sketch and gave initial advice as to colours to be used and techniques.

The watercolour was painted onto heavy duty sketching paper and we found it very different from our usual watercolour paper. However, the sketching paper creates an interesting effect and is most suitable when using pen on top of the watercolour paint.

During the afternoon Alan also managed to demonstrate and guide us in doing a sketch with a water-soluble pen. This was a quick 10-minute exercise. After using the pen we used a damp brush to soften all the outlines.
