Eddie Cooper February 2010
The February demonstration was a watercolour painting of a Lake District scene by Eddie Cooper.

Eddie started with a detailed line drawing of the picture to be painted

While talking about types of paper, brushes and paint, Eddie wetted the first area for colouring

Cobalt, crimson ans light red were mixed to create the sky colour, dark at the top and fading towards the horizon.

Lovely cloud effectes were achieved with a dry brush to remove the colour, tissue paper for the white tops.

Warmer colours are used for closer hills. Eddie tried and tested each colour mix th get the best shades.

Red and green is mixed for pine trees across the lake; the water's edge gets marked out and Eddie gives useful hints on reflections.

A riga brush is used for the nearer pine trees and grasses, then a swordliner to dot leaves of different colours on the foreground shrub.

By tea break the painting is well on its way. Refreshments were served and the raffle drawn.

Eddie works on the foreground giving the lakeside path a rough texture and varying the colours to lead the eye into the scene.

Rocks in the foreground are warmer, darker hues; horizontal lines across the lake are achieved with a bit of help.

The figure and his dog, touching up of light and shade, add a frame and the picture is finished.

Eddie then gave helpful hints on painting trees - how to get a convincing old-looking bark ...

... coverings of ivy and dandelion heads were also requested.

The demonstration finished with hints on painting windows. Peter gave the vote of thanks and everyone agreed it had been a worthwhile afternoon.
