Demonstration Sept 09
Liz Hayward, artist and farmer's wife, demonstrated a watercolour painting of a country scene and farmhouse.

Members that came early to the Community Centre spent time looking at the stalls. Taking bookings for the Lowry trip.

Busy selling and folding raffle tickets. All the prizes have been donated by members.

Liz began her painting with a quick wash of cobalt blue, light red and raw sienna. She tipped up the board getting the colours to flow and blend.

Having limited time for the painting meant the drying had to be speeded up - with the use of a hairdryer.

The outline of trees and colour of the road were added and the scene began to take shape.

A mixture of cadmium yellow and Preylene green produced the dark green for an ivy covering on one of the trees.

Liz enjoys a quick wet on wet style for a loose effect - grass verges and hedgerows appeared.

Using her sword-blade brush, Liz painted in the trunks and branches of the trees.

With outline complete and farm buildings in the distance the picture is halfway there. Time for a coffee break.

The Art Shop was open for members to purchase materials at discount prices.

Some members chatted with Liz about her painting techniques.

Back to work and Liz used darker colours to give the trees a more 3-dimensional effect.

The masking fluid was removed in readiness for finishing touches.

Some autumn colours along the hedgerow and the picture was coming to life.

A few shadows across the road, bits of detail to the distant farm and the picture is complete.

A frame was added - does the painting look better with grey or white surround?

The vote of thanks. Everyone agreed it had been a most useful and enjoyable demonstration.
