December 2011 Liz Hayward
Liz came from her Nottinghamshire farm to demonstrate a watercolour farm scene.

On a cold December day, a hot cup of tea was most welcome.

Liz had prepared a farmyard sketch using masking pen for defining lines.

She will be doing multi washes down the paper to create a sense of unity.

Sometimes she needs to work flat to control the running colours.

The board-tipping technique was new to most members - with good results....

then kitchen paper was used to create the clouds.

The colour wash continued into the farm buildings.....

..... with greens, browns and pinks filling the foreground.

Liz then set to work on the shed, putting in dark windows ....

.. and adding dark green shrubs to push the shed forward.

Using a sword brush she painted the bare tree branches ..

... adding dark green ivy for balance and a sense of unity.

During the tea break Chris and John called the winning raffle numbers.

After removing some of the masking, Liz continued to darken the trees.....

... before working on the foreground.

As she dried the area around the pigs she removed more of the masking.

Pink coloured marks suggest the form of the animals.

Shadows were added and masking removed from the trough.

Some pencil lines and a white border give a finished look to the painting.

A vote of thanks was given for such an inspiring demonstration.
