Banner Making
July 2008 saw the group creating its own colourful banner

The project started with a visit to the National Mining Museum where banners from Yorkshire coal mines were on display.

Emma, the art tutor, discussed ideas in the Mining Museum's classroom.

Soon members were hard at work trying out the printing techniques

By the end of the morning there was a good display of prints to use on an Art Group banner.

The following week Emma visited Crofton Community Centre with printing materials.

Everyone gathered round to discuss ideas.

Based on a drawing by the group organiser, a design was agreed and work could begin.

First came the task of measuring and planning - the wastebin lid came in very handy.

Soon everyone had jobs to do and before long the printing was underway.

After a couple of hours of intense work, the banner was looking good.

The evidence of printing activity was clear to see - but had to be cleared away!

Held upright the banner, although not quite finished, was most impressive.

With the ink still wet the banner was carried out for transport and safe storage.

It was carefully placed in the back of the largest car to be finished off at a later date.

A working group gathered at the Community Centre in September to decide how to complete the banner. Wording was chosen to be stitched onto the yellow border ribbon.

Peggy had stitched the Art Group logo to go in the centre; Jean was working on the White Rose of Yorkshire

John and Susan had made a separate design using some of the templates created during the workshops.

Mary and Peggy were just two of the many Group members who helped with the finishing touches.

Lesley helped with the wording and Marie contributed with her sewing skills. It was an altogether joint production!
